This article summarizes how the field has emerged from the broader sustainability agenda, describes the most influential theories and discusses the behavioral techniques employed in intervention studies. Major challenges and opportunities for research into environmentally sustainable work behavior are identified, in particular the need to integrate the diverse literature and utilize common methods and measures to aid theoretical advancement.

Transactions often differ on important dimensions from spot exchanges on perfect neo-classical markets. Information is seldom complete and instantaneous exchange is just as rare as full competition. The authors in this volume extend the standard economic model stressing the proposition that the social context is an important determinant of the governance of transactions. To foster the development of a body of cumulative knowledge in the new economic sociology, this approach is consistently applied to a diversity of topics including purchase relations, strategic alliances, and relations among lawyers and clients as well as employers and employees. This volume is divided in three parts. The first part surveys purposive behaviour models in research on governance as well as theoretical work extending these models. The contributions in the second and third part all have an empirical component and deal with governance in the various phases of exchange relations: search and selection, negotiating and contracting, contract execution and performance, and conflict regulation. The second part focuses on governance in markets, while the third part discusses governance in organizations.

The idea of carrying out this work stems from the observation that although institutional economics deals with the study of human actions and motivations in their historical evolution, there has been in many cases a lack of scientific collaboration with other fields of social and psychological sciences; in this regard, psychoanalysis is a case in point.
In light of these problems, our work can be synthesized as follows: institutional economics, especially through Veblen's and Commons's contributions, has highlighted a number of aspects that provide a better understanding of the inner nature of social and economic relations. This has been realized through the elaboration of concepts which characterize, in their continual refining, the core of institutional economics: these include ceremonial/instrumental behaviour dichotomy, instincts, culture, evolution, habits, power, path-dependency, tacit knowledge, technology, collective action, going concerns, working rules and social valuing.
In this regard, a systematic collaboration between institutional economics, psychoanalysis and other heterodox fields of social sciences can help us to analyze the following interrelated issues:
* The evolutionary and conflicting nature of habits, routines, organizations, institutions and social valuing.
* The evolutionary and conflicting nature of individual and collective decision-making processes.
* The analysis of structural problems, in particular in developing countries, and the role of institutions and policies in economic and social change.
This collaboration can greatly benefit from contributions provided by other disciplines as well. In this respect, the fact that institutional economics shares significant aspects with important strands of social sciences and with pragmatist and cognitive psychology constitutes an enriching element that can contribute to a more fruitful collaboration between all these theories and psychoanalysis.

What you have here is Chapter 1 of my book on decision making. The objective of the book is to show how our understanding of decision making processes can be enhanced through the adoption of a novel approach to cognition.
Following the distributed cognition approach, Simon's idea of bounds in rationality is challenged and the perspective that we should focus on potentials instead of limits (or bounds) of our cognition is presented.

Globalization in India: New Frontiers and Emerging Challenges

This book is not intended to be clubbed under ‘globalony’. Center of Associates for Sociological Studies and Action, a recently formed body in Kolkata, West Bengal, undertook this book-project to bring out to the fore oft neglected inter-disciplinary discussions and analysis about the impact of the process of globalization on the social institutions like marriage, family, economy, politics, education and religion. It is true that analysis of every institution could not be included in this anthology, and the reason is obvious – dearth of manageable space. However, in the fifteen papers included here specialists from various disciplines have been invited to write for this book so that insight from multiple arenas can enrich our understanding about the process of globalization.
Globalization is not a static social phenomenon rather is extremely transitory, fluid, and often very disruptive. There are many reasons for which the process of globalization is considered to be so. It is for the social scientists to explore these reasons so that these reasons can be empirically examined, causally analyzed, and qualitatively treated. In this age of ‘globalony’, it is not uncommon to see pseudo-intellectuals to take sides either for or against the process of globalization. What is common among them is the fact that there is an absence of academic rigor that will permit them to go beyond rhetoric. For example, the most common skirmish that we witness in the name of globalization, in any academic forum worth a penny, is its egalitarian nature. The lines of divide are very and exact. But what is lost in the process is the realization that ultimately globalization is a process of capitalistic systems and free societies, which deceptively promotes the vested interests of the powerful private corporations and dominant powerful countries, therefore, it cannot provide fair competition, and resolve the tensions. Many a times we forget to remember the embedded contradiction in the process of globalization is the fact that ‘private property’ is both giver and taker of ‘human dignity and equal rights’ depending upon the social structure or the relation of production. So there is nothing to despair when we see the forces of globalization destabilizing the foundation of free society dependent on democratic ideals. Another overrated aspect of globalization is its tools, i.e. the rapid and unprecedented advance in communication and information technologies, assuming that people can and will take advantage of these and improve their quality of life. However, unprecedented advancement in communication and information technologies has aggravated the feeling of deprivation among majority of the population of the world by images and evidences of the huge gap in wealth and comfort between the rich and the poor. If we look at the argument of breaking down of barriers and borders among nation states due the process of globalization then we have to only look at the ever increasing rules and regulations that are being devised to protect nations from in-migration of people and exodus of industry and employment. The ‘dream sale’ of globalization by sanctifying the role of the capitalist powerhouse nations is done by introducing new parameters of measuring poverty prescribed by financial institutions, like World Bank, so that vicious cycle of poverty is hidden by reduced number of people below-poverty-line. Oppression and sufferings are relegated to the background as globalization is celebrated in academic discourse. For this reason, many a times we are unable to point out the fact that the chaos and unrest or violence or identity politics among groups are mostly caused by differential access to goods and services, and paradoxical expenditure pattern, and not because of clashes of civilization. Nevertheless, the states delude themselves in the name of globalization and spend more in suppressing chaos and violence rather that spending the same amount of resources in tackling issues like poverty and human rights violation. Similarly, the area of education and health has become profit making enterprises, and the role of globalization is to phase out the state from its welfare principles for its citizens.
It is expected that this anthology will be able to avoid such anomaly, and will give us a fresh perspective, taking input from various social science discipline, regarding the process of globalization and its impact on growing economy and changing society of India. Treatment in all the papers have been preferably done qualitatively, therefore, these papers are expected to open up avenues of new research for future among post-graduate students and research scholars, instead of blocking them into theoretical compartments and stereotypes. Towards this end all our contributors have been very sensitive. We would like to say thanks to all of them keeping faith in this project of Center of Associates for Sociological Studies and Action, Kolkata

This book aims to analyze the impact of transformational leadership and ethical integrity in firms’ strategic orientation related to corporate social responsibility. A survey of the largest Portuguese firms was conducted during the second quarter of 2009; data from 50 participating firms were gathered through a self-reporting questionnaire. The results indicated that transformational leadership positively related to a firm’s strategic orientation in regard to corporate social responsibility. However, leaders’ ethical integrity was not significantly linked to the adoption of corporate social responsibility practices. These findings suggest that further research is needed in regard to leaders’ ethical integrity and firms’ social responsibility orientation. Practitioners may also benefit from these findings by using them to transform themselves into authentic transformational leaders who incorporate corporate social responsibility as a core strategic value within their firms.
