In particular the study focuses on how archaeological interpretations of stone objects and stone-working can help understand the adoption and continued presence of metal and metallurgy in prehistoric Europe. The author compares traditionally identified stone skeuomorphs—that is, meaningful imitations—of metal with their putative prototypes. Three separate corpora of these stone skeuomorphs have been identified: polished stone shafthole axes from the Netherlands and surrounding areas, identified as copies of perforated, copper axes; flint daggers from Jutland, identified as copies of bronze, metal-hilted daggers; and jet spacer-plate ornaments from the British Isles, Ireland and Brittany, identified as copies of hammered gold lunulae.

A review of what helps and hinders sustainable development at the local level.
'There is currently no clear map of how local and national government can work together to encourage sustainable living. This report identifies the obstacles and barriers to delivering sustainable development at the local level. Drawing on a range of information, Seeing the bigger picture reviews what sustainable development actually means in government, and why providing coherence and consistency is vital.
It identifies how government policies and performance requirements – at both the central and local level – might be better shaped for the future. The authors suggest that a new public service ethos that embraces lasting changes is needed in order to inspire greater government commitment at all levels. They conclude with a review of the implications for policy.

Globalization has highlighted changes in socio-economic terms and is reshaping the world. Exogenous factors drive technological progress, as well as driving economic growth via international technology diffusion. The international diffusion of technology therefore becomes one of most important topics of economics and technology policy research. However, comparing endogenous factors, exogenous factors are complexity and demonstrate as network phenomenon. The network phenomenon composes by neither solely nor independently unit. Countries in global network demonstrate interdependent, and influenced by many others. Hence, the characteristic of network structure implicate complexity configuration. Restated, the study of international diffusion is complication and multi-dimensional than using single perspective is difficult to reveal their structure.
Thus, this study utilizes social network analysis for investigating the structural configuration of international technology diffusion. Meanwhile, this study adopts two perspectives of collective behavioral research; they are power analysis, role and position analysis to examine the network structure of international technology diffusion. More specifically, this study exams the power structure of each country by network betweenness. The power analysis reveal micro feature of diffusion structures. Furthermore, by using role and position analysis categorize network actors by behavioral performance which regards technology mobility process; source, transmitter, and receiver. This investigation provides macro perspective on diffusion structure. In addition, this study tries to distinguish the channel differentiation of technology diffusion. In terms of embodied technology, that investigates by multilateral trade flow. On the other hand, the disembodied technology investigation utilizes the patent citations of respective country.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the deep structure of international technology diffusion and structural differences between embodied and disembodied technology diffusion networks. Through network analysis, this work is able to reveal the network position and roles of countries, and also to examine the relationships that exist between different diffusion networks. This study aims to make to following contributions to the literature on international technology diffusion; this study is the first to employ a multilateral perspective and longitude data to examine the cross-country network structure.
This work, thus, provides an understanding of the nature of globalization, its conceptualization and measurement, and how influence and effect is transmitted across distance through the interconnectedness of international technology diffusion. The findings not only illustrate the pattern change of diffusion structure form cascade-like to radial-like, but also present the structural configuration of technologically advanced countries and the competitive positions of each country. Furthermore, this study further utilizes structuralism perspective and systematic approach, which is rarely adopted in the literature, to study international technology diffusion, which involves various complex processes. Thus, the findings regarding the diffusion pattern changes and network position identifications can make policy implications for countries interested in exogenous effects for technological growth.
Keywords: International technology diffusion, network analysis, embodied and disembodied technology, structural configuration, technology spillover, international environment.

Empirical evidence on the content and strategies of reform is provided and the Italian specificities are highlighted. Public sector innovation in Italy has not benefited from a sustained political support and the wide-ranging agenda of reforms has suffered an “implementation gap”, characterizing legalistic countries. A particularly strong dynamism and vivacity of innovation has been registered in local services, healthcare and social assistance, education and cultural heritage management. In these sectors, the regional and local governments have developed relevant capacities of network management. A differentiated approach to innovation - in terms of speed and degree of change - in the different geographical areas and levels of government can be observed. It can be fully understood only by taking into consideration the administrative culture and history of our country.

In this master thesis we have studied how idea work unfolds in early product development. We have done this by examining the idea work in a company called Alfa Laval that is specialized in developing separation solutions for industrial companies. Furthermore, we have developed a series of recommendations on how idea work can be staged to make it of high quality. In addition, we have developed a number of tools, which Alfa Laval can use to improve their idea work. By examining the early product development through the term of idea work, we wish to bring focus to the product developers’ practical work with ideas in the early product development.
The point of departure for this thesis was a realization that Alfa Laval had problems doing radical innovation. We therefore decided to explore their innovation process to gain insight in how to harness the company’s innovation potential. This decision triggered an examination of the existing innovation literature. Through this examination we noticed an amount of literature about the early innovation process called the Fuzzy Front End (FFE).
We found this part of the innovation process interesting because it seemed to be a place for improvement of the overall innovation process. We therefore conducted a review of some of the exsisting FFE litterataur to gain further insight in this. We found, that the FFE literature seems to be focused on organizational perspectives of innovation and FFE management. We thereby found it to be lacking a focus on the people that actually creates innovations e.g. product developers. We therefore saw a potential of improving the FFE literature by obtaining insight into this practical dimension of innovation. Therefore we decided to investigate the work of the product developers at Alfa Laval with the focus on idea work.
As a foundation for our study of the idea work, we used empirical data obtained through interviews with primarily product developers. Through this we analyzed the idea work at Alfa Laval from three perspectives; an individual perspective, a social perspective and a process perspective. Within each perspective, we found interesting aspects of the idea-work, which led us to a comprehensive understanding of how idea work unfolds as a whole. We hereby found that idea-work unfolds as a social and individual process where the idea continuously is being framed and reframed by the individuals who engage in the idea work. The social processes take place through the intersection of object worlds. This intersection is made possible through the use boundary objects that can transforma the individuals’ knowledge.
These boundary objects are created through the individual processes. The goal of the idea work is to make the idea interesting to as many object worlds as possible. Hereby the idea can gain support, at first internally and later externally whereby innovative success ca be achieved.
We also found, that idea work is influenced by the context it occurs in. This context consists of both organizational and market conditions. The context influences the idea work indirectly
because the individuals that engage in the idea work make sense of the context and enact in the idea work according to this. Thus the context affects the idea work through the individuals engaging in it.
To simplify the understanding we have gained of idea work, we have developed the Idea-Framing model. This model should be understood as our contribution to the existing FFE literature. We believe the Idea-Framing Model to be an important contribution to the literature because it presents an understanding of how the work with ideas is actually performed, which does not seem to be of focus in the FFE.
In addition to the model, we have developed a number of recommendations on how idea work can be staged to improve its quality. We have therefore made general recommendations but also specific recommendations for Alfa Laval. We have also developed a number of tools that can assist Alfa Laval in the staging process. These tools consist of two groups, communication tools and innovation tools. The communication tools should be used to communicate our understanding of idea work to the employees at Alfa Laval and the innovation tools should be used when performing idea work. This means, that the communication tools develop a shared syntax for the employees to be able to communicate about idea work and thus deliberately stage it. The innovation tools are designed to be used in
meetings between individuals and thus in the staging of each meeting to take advantage of the potential that exists between the different object worlds. All tools are built as boundary
objects that can transform knowledge when used. It is our hope that the recommendation and tools can help Alfa Laval to harness their innovation potential through deliberate staging of idea work.

2003 Paul Bunge Prize of the Hans R. Jenemann Foundation for the History of Scientific Instruments
Judging the brightness and color of light has long been contentious. Alternately described as impossible and routine, it was beset by problems both technical and social. How trustworthy could such measurements be? Was the best standard of intensity a gas lamp, an incandescent bulb, or a glowing pool of molten metal? And how much did the answers depend on the background of the specialist?
A History of Light and Colour Measurement: Science in the Shadows is a history of the hidden workings of physical science-a technical endeavor embedded in a social context. It argues that this "undisciplined" subject, straddling academia, commerce, and regulation, may be typical not only of 20th century science, but of its future.
Attracting scientists, engineers, industrialists, and artists, the developing subject produced a new breed of practitioners having mixed provenance. The new measurers of light had to decide the shape not only of their specialism but of their careers: were they to be a part of physics, engineering, or psychology? The physical scientists who dominated the subject into the early 20th century made their central aim the replacement of the problematic human eye with physical detectors of light. For psychologists between the wars, though, describing the complexity of color was more important than quantifying a handful of its dimensions. And after WWII, military designers shaped the subject of radiometry and subsumed photometry and colorimetry within it. Never attaining a professional cachet, these various specialists moved fluidly between science and technology; through government, industry, and administration.

Hall offer a unified, transdisciplinary approach for achieving sustainable development in industrialized nations. They present an insightful analysis of the ways in which industrial states are currently unsustainable and how economic and social welfare are related to the environment, to public health and safety, and to earning capacity and meaningful and rewarding employment. The authors argue for the design of multipurpose solutions to the sustainability challenge that integrate economics, employment, technology, environment, industrial development, national and international law, trade, finance, and public and worker health and safety. This book is essential reading for anyone with a policy or scholarly interest in sustainable development and the critical roles of the economy, employment, and the environment.
