Alexandre Mitchell brings an interdisciplinary approach to this topic, combining theories and methods of art history, archaeology, and classics with the anthropology of humour, and thereby establishing new ways of looking at art and visual humour in particular. Understanding what visual humour was to the ancients and how it functioned as a tool of social cohesion is only one facet of this study. Mitchell also focuses on the social truths that his study of humour unveils: democracy and freedom of expression, politics and religion, Greek vases and trends in fashion, market-driven production, proper and improper behaviour, popular versus elite culture, carnival in situ, and the place of women, foreigners, workers, and labourers within the Greek city. Richly illustrated with more than 140 drawings and photographs, as well as with analytical tables of comic representations according to different themes, painters, and techniques, this study amply documents the comic representations that formed an important part of ancient Greek visual language from the 6th through 4th centuries BC.

The main concern of this volume is the multi-layered concept of ethnicity.
Contributors examine and contextualise contrasting definitions of ethnicity and identity as implicit in two perspectives, one from the classical tradition and another from the prehistoric and anthropological tradition.
They look at the role of textual sources in reconstructing ethnicity and introduce fresh and innovative archaeological data in reconstructing ethnicity, either from fieldwork or from new combinations of old data.
Finally, in contrast to many traditional approaches to ethnicity, they examine the relative and interacting role of natural and cultural features in the landscape in the construction of ethnicity.
The volume is headed by the contribution of Andrea Carandini whose work challenges the conceptions of many in the combination of text and archaeology. He begins by examining the mythology surrounding the founding of Rome, taking into consideration the recent archaeological evidence from the Palatine and the Forum. Here primacy is given to construction of place and mythological descent. Anthony Snodgrass, Robin Osborne, Tim Cornell and Christopher Smith offer replies to his arguments.
Overall, the nineteen papers presented here show that a modern interdisciplinary and international archaeology that combines material data and textual evidence - critically - can provide a powerful lesson for the full understanding of the ideologies of ancient and modern societies. 336p, 120 illus (Oxbow Books, 2011).

Cinco ensaios Antiguidade/ Essays on Antiquity

Cinco ensaios sobre a antiguidade
Sandra Lúcia Rodrigues da Rocha (org.)
Formato 14x21 cm, 110 páginas
ISBN 978-85-391-338-6
O teatro grego é a origem do teatro ocidental?

The appearance of Martin Bernal's Black Athena: The Afro-Asian Roots of Classical Civilization in 1987 sparked intense debate and controversy in Africa, Europe, and North America. His detailed genealogy of the 'fabrication of Greece' and his claims for the influence of ancient African and Near Eastern cultures on the making of classical Greece, questioned many intellectuals' assumptions about the nature of ancient history.
The transportation of enslaved African persons into Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, brought African and diasporic African people into contact in significant numbers with the Greek and Latin classics for the first time in modern history. In African Athena, the contributors explore the impact of the modern African disapora from the sixteenth century onwards on Western notions of history and culture, examining the role Bernal's claim has played in European and American understandings of history, and in classical, European, American and Caribbean literary production.
African Athena examines the history of intellectuals and literary writers who contested the white, dominant Euro-American constructions of the classical past and its influence on the present.
Martin Bernal has written an Afterword to this collection.

Jh. n. Chr.).
The subject of this work is the religion of the Celts as far as depicted in the ancient literary sources. Our knowledge of this part of Celtic life is, beside epigraphic monuments and archaeological findings, mainly based on the Greek and Latin literary testimonies. This material was for the first time collected in the thirties of the last century by Johannes ZWICKER in his Fontes Historiae Religionis Celticae. In this collection, which is not replaced till today, a lot of relevant passages are missing; moreover it is a mere text-collection without any commentary. The scope of the present research is to overcome with these deficits: For the sake of a better understanding the Greek and Latin testimonies are presented with an attached German translation. Furthermore the chronologically arranged passages are furnished with a detailed commentary, in which these often problematic testimonies are thoroughly analysed on the basis of current research. Questions of textual criticism and Quellenkritik are taken into consideration. The particular testimonies are treated in the larger framework of the relevant work, the intrinsic text references and the special features of specific literary genera are taken into account. In the following textual analysis the information content of the testimonies is interpreted. For this purpose the results of various relevant scientific disciplines were gathered together. This allows a better understanding of the literary testimonies i.e. confirmations, corrections or supplements. The present volume is the last of the three-volume collection. It contains 339 passages from 108 different authors, starting with the 2nd century AD writer Arrianos and ending with the Italian humanist Natalis Comes (16th century AD).
