O.F. Bollnow, Human Space
Translated by Christine Shuttleworth. Edited and with an afterword by Joseph Kohlmaier

Human space is a study of space as we experience it, and how this experience is expressed in our culture and imagination. Showing a great sensitivity to the near and the everyday, it is a highly idiosyncratic but accessible phenomenology, often surprising and insightful, which draws in equal measure on anthropology, etymology, philosophy, poetry and fiction. Originally published in 1963, it is a seminal contribution to what is known today as the ‘spatial turn’ in late twentieth-century philosophy.
Of all Bollnow’s books, Human space has had the most lasting impact outside philosophy. Now in its eleventh printing, the German original continues to attract a diverse readership and has generated considerable interest in the domain of environmental psychology, architecture and urban design. A document of its time, it remains relevant today and opens a window on a wide range of early thinking in this field, including many sources that are still little known in the English-speaking world.

This inquiry into the relationship between theory and practice in the discipline of architecture is from a semiotic point of view. It introduces some of the current theoretical-philosophical and methodological structures and procedures which support the author's inquiry, and provides a connection between the inquiry and various theories of architects. Frascari's book includes an important historical investigation into a neglected area and will be of great interest to students of semiotics, phenomenology, and architectural theory

The collection of essays presented in Landscape Imprints trace their origins to an international gathering of landscape architects and educators hosted by Clemson University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture in the fall of 2003 at CELA’s annual conference in Charleston, South Carolina.
For the reader, the second edition of twenty-two peer-reviewed essays presents a range of significant topical discourse on the landscape in the first decade of the 21st century by leading authors in the field of landscape architecture and landscape studies. Sustainability, globalization, gendered landscape, landscapes of power and race, technologically-mediated landscape, the geography of terrorism, learning environments, and post-ethnic landscapes offer a brief spectrum of the dialogue that runs through the collection’s five topical sections on culture, history, sustainability, technology, learning and the landscape.

Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism is a new, updated, re-written edition of "New Trends in Architectural Education: Designing the Design Studio." As a new round of pedagogical dialogue on architecture and urbanism it resets the stage for debating future visions of transformative pedagogy and its impact on design education. As a forward looking effort, this edition comes to amalgamate concerns, concepts, and practices that Ashraf M. Salama has explored and introduced over a period of two decades.
Transformative pedagogy in architecture and urbanism is about balancing the creative act required for creating responsive environments and the social and environmental responsibilities that should be embedded in this act. It is about understanding how knowledge is produced, what the components of such knowledge are, and what are the learning processes and social practices that can be used to transmit it.
Structured in five chapters Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism presents a wide range of innovative concepts and practical methodologies for teaching architectural and urban design. It traces the roots of architectural education and offer several contrasting ideas and strategies of design teaching practices.
• A New Theory for Transformative Pedagogy in Architecture and Urbanism
• The Architect, the Profession, and Society
• The Conventional Approach to Studio Teaching Practice
• Against the Conventional Studio Pedagogy
• Empowering Transformative Pedagogy: A Knowledge-Based Architectural and Urban Design Studio

From the Back Cover
This groundbreaking book is a new comprehensive round of debate developed in response to the lack of research on design pedagogy. It provides thoughts, ideas, and experiments of design educators of different generations, different academic backgrounds, who are teaching and conducting research in different cultural contexts. It probes future universal visions within which the needs of future shapers of the built environment can be conceptualized and the design pedagogy that satisfies those needs can be debated. Addressing academics, practitioners, graduate students, and those who make decisions about the educational system over twenty contributors remarkably introduce analytical reflections on their positions and experience. Two invited contributions of. N. John Habraken and Henry Sanoff offer visionary thoughts on their outstanding experience in design pedagogy and research. Structured in five chapters, this book introduces theoretical perspectives on design pedagogy and outlines a number of thematic issues that pertain to critical thinking and decision making; cognitive and teaching/learning styles; community, place, and service learning; and the application of digital technologies in studio teaching practices, all articulated in a conscious endeavor toward the betterment of the built environment.
