Abstract
In the months leading up to the 21st UN Climate Change Conference, policy makers, pension trustees and academic thought leaders have been active devising new ways of fostering private capital stewardship and “green investment”. In spite of pressures exercised by neoconservative circles in the United States and the European Union, Pope Francis insisted on the publication of a resolutely environmentalist encyclical calling for the preservation of “our Sister, Mother Earth”.

Pope Francis's 2015 Encyclical "Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home" 1 is a landmark papal document on the environment and social justice. In this work, the Francis issues a bold call for action to address urgent environmental concerns, including climate change, environmental degradation, pollution, and the rapid global collapse of biodiversity. More broadly and deeply, he calls for an "ecological conversion" (217) 2 that entails radical changes in the way people live, view nature, treat the environment, organize social life, and act toward one another. Though written very clearly and engagingly, the document is lengthy (about 80 printed pages) and may be confusing to some not familiar with Catholic social teaching. In this brief paper, I shall try to do three things: (1) explain what's new and important about the document, (2) briefly summarize its principal claims and conclusions, and (3) offer some personal reflections on some of its strengths and weaknesses. What's New and Important about the Encyclical "Laudato Si'" is an encyclical, which is an especially solemn and authoritative form of papal teaching. Most papal encyclicals tend to be focused narrowly on Catholic doctrine, are addressed to the Pope's fellow Bishops or to the Catholic faithful, cite only authoritative Church sources (such as the teachings of Church Councils, prior papal documents, reports of Bishops' conferences, and the views of venerable Catholic theologians), and are not widely read outside of Church circles. "Laudato Si'" is different in all these respects. It is addressed to all of

The climate crisis and the credit crisis have made the political issues surrounding investment and finance more critical than ever before. Proposals for ‘Green New Deals’ and the like — aimed at tackling both global warming and global recession — are streaming forth worldwide. Yet many such proposals are incoherent in that they overlook the need for an immediate start to a programme of phasing out both fossil fuels and purported fossil fuel substitutes such as nuclear power and industrial-scale agrofuels. They also tend to rely on Northern-biased conceptions of technology transfer and intellectual property that the climate crisis has helped make obsolete. To overcome these problems, future climate movements will have to focus increasingly on the democratization of research, planning and finance.

This paper analyzes the theoretical and pragmatic implications, for international relations and world politics, of the new holistic approach to climate change articulated by Pope Francis in the Encyclical Laudato si’, particularly through the notion “integral ecology”. Far for being just a new chapter in the unfolding process of the “greening” of religions, the document raises in radical terms the issue of the sustainability of the present world system. I contend that the perspective of the Encyclical calls for a radical transformation of international relations, since it puts emphasis on the deep implications of environmental issues on the entire spectrum of security, development, economic and ethical challenges of contemporary world politics. Against this backdrop, I connect the main tenets of the Encyclical to the environmental turn in International Relations Theory and to the new epistemological challenges related to paradigm shift induced by the new planetary condition of the A...

Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home (2015) is an ecclesiastical declaration of interdependence between humans and the rest of nature. 1 Having taken the name Francis when he was elected Pope in March 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires chose to align himself with the saint he described as "the man of poverty, the man of peace, the man who loves and protects creation." 2 Two years later he issued Laudato Si', the title of which is taken from Saint Francis's "Canticle of the Sun." 3 Throughout the encyclical, Pope Francis emphasizes ecological interconnectedness, a staple of contemporary environmentalist thought, but his concept of interconnectedness generously includes the equity and cohesion of human society as well as the health of natural systems. The Pope refers to this interrelatedness as "integral ecology," painting Saint Francis, the animating spirit of his encyclical, as an exemplar of integral ecology, "concerned [both] for God's creation and the poor and the outcast" and showing how "inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace." 4 Although of obvious importance to the Catholic Church and its members, the encyclical has a broader intended audience, as it seeks to engage all people-co-inhabitants of what the Pope calls our "common home"-in dialogue about the human-nature relationship. 5 In this Article, we consider the encyclical in this broader context. We identify nonecclesiastical antecedents of Pope Francis's reflections, including secular

Just as we know who was responsible for the slave trade, and who profited from it -- in some cases right down to the specific families and firms -- so too do we know who is responsible for the climate crisis. And we know who has profited from that death drive towards the planetary inferno. In the words of the radical folksinger Utah Phillips, we know who is responsible, and they have names and addresses. This is the spirit of the radical challenge to the Environmentalism of the Rich and its superconcept, the Anthropocene. To them we say, Another biosphere is possible! How could global equity investors fight climate change and what are the implications for their portfolios? We construct a new climate alignment database to address these questions. Investors can fight climate change in two ways: by funding firms aligned with a sub 2 °C scenario; and by engaging firms to lower their climate footprint. Investing in climate-aligned firms does not raise portfolio risk much. For example, a simple 1.5 °C equity portfolio is only 0.9 pp more volatile than global equities. The reason is simple: most sectors have climate-aligned firms. Hence, “low-temperature” portfolios can diversify across sectors. Engagement has huge potential. All firms adopting their sector’s existing best practices may bring the world economy back on a 2 °C trajectory. Moreover, engagement does increase portfolio risk, and may even boost returns. Overall, investors can fight climate change without foregoing returns or increasing portfolio risk substantially.

This study examined the environmentalism and politics of climate change by undertaking a study of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) focusing on the Kyoto Protocol document and the UNFCCC conferences held after Kyoto that has centered on how to garner consensus on the way forward for the global community. The study also probed why the agreement at Kyoto, Japan started having problems when a change of government occurred in the United States with a Republican President that leaned towards the interests of big business most of whom would bear the most costs if the policies as articulated in the Kyoto protocols were to be executed and why the Democratic presidency of Barrack Obama has been slow in pushing forward the agreement at Kyoto. The study concluded that national political interests of the major powers seem to have stalled the implementation of the Kyoto protocol but a change in the dynamics of global leadership spectrum can have a significant imp...
